Excitement was in the air today as Lorne Lasuita, Chef de Mission for Team Sask, announced the team that will be representing Saskatchewan at the 2015 Western Canada Summer Games.
Team Sask 2015 will participate in the Western Canada Summer Games in the region of Wood Buffalo, Alberta, August 7 - 16, 2015. The team consists of 390 athletes, coaches, managers, and technicians, as well as 16 Mission Staff. There are over 70 Saskatchewan communities represented by Team Sask 2015.
“Our government congratulates all of the Saskatchewan athletes participating in the 2015 Western Canada Summer Games,” Minister of Parks, Culture and Sport Mark Docherty said. “Team Sask has talented athletes whose skill, enthusiasm and commitment to sport are an inspiration to our growing province and we wish them the best of luck in Wood Buffalo.”
“The Games enhance sport development in western Canada and create legacies in the host community” Lasuita said. “This group is truly a provincial team, as over 70 communities throughout the province are represented, creating a strong message of the value of sport in developing a healthy active lifestyle.”
The Western Canada Summer Games are Western Canada’s largest amateur multi-sport event and have a positive impact on Canada’s next generation of national, international and Olympic champions. In Saskatchewan, the likes of Kaylyn Kyle and Kelly Parker, both Western Canada Summer Games alumni, have excelled at the international and Olympic level.
Saskatchewan has played a large role in the Western Canada Summer Games, hosting the highest number of Games. Regina and Saskatoon hosted the first two Western Canada Summer Games in 1975 and 1979 respectively, Regina hosted again in 1987 and Prince Albert in 1999. In 2019, Swift Current will proudly welcome participants, officials and family members to its city for the next Western Canada Summer Games.
"Best wishes to all of the athletes, coaches, managers, technical staff and mission staff who will be representing Team Sask at the 2015 Western Canada Summer Games,” said Todd Fuchs, Sask Sport Inc. President. “This event is a great way to honour and recognize the Year of Sport in Canada and to promote that Sport Is More Than A Game. Participating in these games is a significant accomplishment and Sask Sport Inc. is very proud of all the members of Team Sask. I hope that each of you enjoy every minute of these games and achieve your personal goals."
Athletes will be competing in 18 different sports throughout the two phase event. Team Sask results will be updated daily on the Team Sask web site at www.teamsask.ca and can also be found at https://wcsg2015.gems.pro.
