ST. JOHN’S, NL (August 9, 2025): With Saturday evening’s lighting of the flame, the 2025 Canada Summer Games is officially underway. The Opening Ceremony brought together more than 2,000 of Canada’s top amateur athletes from all thirteen provinces and territories alongside their coaches, managers, staff, and supporters from across the country for a rollicking East Coast party.
Beach Volleyball athlete Alexa Smith (White City) was one of thirteen athletes selected to take part in the torch relay before the flame was lit by five-time Paralympian and Canada Games alumna Katarina Roxon. “Carrying the flame was such a special moment. I felt proud to represent Saskatchewan, my community, and the sport I love. I really want to bring home a medal for Saskatchewan – we’re not known for beach volleyball and I want to put us on the map!”
Rugby Sevens athlete Bryn Rondeau (Regina), who will be competing with his teammate and brother Jaxon at the Games, shared his impressions of the Games immediately after the Opening Ceremony, where he and his team took to the floor to join in the Newfoundland dancing. “It was fun–so fun. It’s good for team spirit. I’m really looking forward to competing here. It’s such a good experience for everyone here at the Canada Games to get exposure like this. Hopefully people achieve their dreams and get to their goals and where they’re trying to go.”
In the crowd were numerous parents, family members, and supporters of Team Sask athletes, including Cynthia and Oliviah Mensah, mom and aunt to Zavier Thode (Soccer; Saskatoon). “They’re representing well – we’re so proud of them!”
Heather Striker, whose son Griffin (Swift Current) is also on the Male Soccer team, added: "We just want them to enjoy this once in a lifetime experience. They deserve it."
Competition for Team Sask will begin tomorrow in Basketball (M & F), Baseball (M), Box Lacrosse (F), Tennis, Softball (F), and Soccer (M). Find the details below.
