Overview
The 2009 Canada Summer Games were held in Prince Edward Island from August 15th to 29th, split up amongst the communities of Summerside, Charlottetown, Halifax, Clinton, Kensington, Alberton and Abram Village. Team Sask came in at sixth place in both medal standings (48: 13 gold, 15 silver, and 20 bronze) and Flag Points (158.5).
The Games produced a number of notable alumni who would use their experience as part of Team Sask as a springboard for world-class competition. Chelsea Valois, Team Sask silver medalist in the heptathlon, would later go on to win a gold medal at the 2013 Bobsleigh World Championships and compete for Team Canada in bobsleigh at the 2014 Sochi Olympics. Taryn Suttie of Saskatoon placed fourth in shot put at the 2009 CSG and went on to compete for Team Canada at both the 2015 Toronto Pan Am Games and 2016 Rio Olympics. Melfort's Tait Nystuen, competing in Rugby at the 2009 CSG, moved his focus to athletics, where he specialized in the 400mH. He earned 7th place at the 2010 IAAF Junior World Championships as well as back-to-back Canadian senior national championship titles in 2012 and 2013, and competed for Team Canada at the 2015 Toronto Pan Am Games.
