MEDAL ALERT | Regina’s Leo Zheng wins Saskatchewan’s first gold medal of the 2025 Canada Summer Games

ST. JOHN’S, NL (August 12, 2025): With his second Canada Games record-setting swim of the day, para swimmer Leo Zheng has earned the first gold medal for Team Sask at the 2025 Canada Summer Games in St. John’s, NL. Zheng earned 823 points in the 100M(S6-14) Backstroke Para Swimming event.

The 18-year-old Reginian swims for the Moose Jaw Flying Fins. This is his second Canada Games, having also competed at the 2022 Summer Games in Niagara.

Immediately after his results were announced, Zheng provided his reaction. "I went there, I prepared all day, I’ve been thinking about it… It was really close between who was going in first and who was going in second. We both gave it our all. It was a really close race. Post-race, it was amazing. I knew it had to be close, but I didn’t know how close – me and the team, we were just waiting and waiting. It felt great. I don’t think I’ll ever forget that moment. Like, bang – we’re here, we’re on the board, we’re here to race and compete.”

He added: “My Canada Games experience has been great. There’s not much like this that compares to this experience. When you’re here and representing your province, it feels amazing.”

Photos will be uploaded to the Swimming gallery following the medal ceremony.

Interview footage will be shared following the ceremony along with general and sport-specific footage and b-roll, which is available for media use here: Dropbox link.
