Charlottetown, PE   It was the girls who were leading team Saskatchewan on the ice on day 5 in PEI. Hannah Rugg led her Regina rink to a pair of wins while Team Sask ringette earned a much-needed victory.

TEAM SASKATCHEWAN IN DEPTH:

 

CURLING - FEMALE

  • Hanna Rugg and her Regina rink were as sharp as ever on Wednesday. They started the day off by beating Team BC 7-3. In the afternoon, the team got past Ontario 9-3 in a game that ended in handshakes after seven ends.

  • The team is now 3-2 and is off to the quarter finals. Quarter finals will be Thursday afternoon at 4 pm CST. The final draw of pool play is Thursday morning.

 

RINGETTE - FEMALE

  • Make it back-to-back wins for the girls in Montague! They beat Nova Scotia 11-5 on Wednesday. Lauren Schoenhofen (shane-hoe-fin) of Regina led the way with four goals and one assist. Saskatoon’s Kylee Banerd (BA-nerd) added three goals and two assists while Rylie Bryden of Regina had four assists.

  • With a 2-2 record in pool play, Saskatchewan advances to the quarter final on Thursday. They will meet New Brunswick at 3:30 pm CST at the Cavendish Farms Wellness Centre in Three Rivers.

 

WHEELCHAIR BASKETBALL

  • On Wednesday, Team Sask wrapped up pool play with a 55-27 win over Newfoundland. Jordan Bortis had a game high 18 points for Saskatchewan, while Eli Corpuz had 13. 

  • They’ll now play in a quarter final at 5pm CST on Thursday vs Alberta.

 

SPEED SKATING - LONG TRACK

  • A sunny day in Halifax as the speed skaters were able to at least start the day on the ice Wednesday morning. The female 500m long track speed skating event saw Serena Dallaire in 13th and Ella Cloutier 14th as Team Sask’s highest finishers. Sophia Dvorak finished 19th while Melissa Scutchings finished 23rd.

  • In the 500m male event, Luca Veeman finished in 5th place. Bon Lowe was 9th, Daniel Pauli 12th and Ferguson English 17th.

  • The sun was not ideal for ice conditions. The women’s pursuit event was able to go and Team Sask finished 4th. The group was 4.31 seconds off the podium. However, due to the bad ice, the men’s pursuit was postponed to Thursday.

  • Saskatchewan will be hoping for medals on Thursday as the day will feature the 5,000m along with the team pursuit.

 

HOCKEY - MALE

  • The team has finished first in their pool and enjoyed a day off Wednesday before quarter-final play begins on Thursday.

  • Team Sask will play in a quarter final on Thursday in Summerside, scheduled for 2pm CST. The team plays Nova Scotia who won a qualifying game Wednesday night to make the quarter final.

 

TABLE TENNIS

  • Lucy Fan and Aryanna Liu continued team play on Wednesday. They won their first match of the day over Nova Scotia but fell 3-0 to Manitoba to end their run short of the semi-final. 

  • Table tennis singles begin on Thursday starting at 7am CST.

 

KARATE

  • Kumite - 59 kg female action in Summerside saw Anika Tran of Saskatoon compete in four bouts on Wednesday but fail to earn a victory. Taylor Downey of Melfort also competed in four bouts but did not pick up a victory. The two athletes finished tied for 9th.

  • On the male side, Axcel Lorezca of of Saskatoon dropped his quarter final bout to Haruki Mori of BC. In double elimination, he dropped a tough bout 5-4 to Jacob LeBlanc of New Brunswick and then his final bout to Mohamed Ilbouche of Quebec. He finished 7th overall. 

  • On Thursday, Aryanna Charles of Saskatoon will be in action with her first bout scheduled for 7am CST.


 

SQUASH

  • Saskatchewan had two matches in the male team competition for Ayan Abbas, Kashif Fiaz, and Isaiah Richter of Regina, along with Will Shevkenek of Saskatoon. The early morning match saw Isaiah Richter lose 4-0 to Ontario but the team bounced back as Will Shevkenek beat New Brunswick in the second match.

  • The female team of Jiayan Cau and Khushi Goyal of Regina along with Ellie Gelowitz of Saskatoon and Mae Shevkenek earned a split in their two matches. After the team lost its first match, Gelowitz beat Yukon 4-0 in the second match.

  • Play continues on Thursday.

 

GYMNASTICS - TRAMPOLINE

  • Wednesday saw Jami Reschke of Regina reach the final in the individual competition. She finished 6th overall after the final routine with a score of 45.815.

  • In the male individual, Wilson Reimche reached the final and finished 6th with a score of 47.040.

  • On Thursday it will be mixed team trampoline on the schedule beginning at 7:30am CST.

 

GYMNASTICS - ARTISTIC

  • In the all around male competition, Brody Benson finished 19th overall with a score of 69.900. Tristan Marquis finished 23rd and Jordan Carroll finished 30th.

  • On Thursday it’s the all around female event beginning at 2:30pm CST.

 

BIATHLON

  • Action resumes on Thursday with the 12.5 km individual male and the 10 km individual female finals.
