Team Sask announces flagbearer for 2017 Canada Summer Games Opening Ceremony

WINNIPEG, MB (July 28th, 2017): Team Sask is pleased to announce that Rylan Wiens of Pike Lake will lead Saskatchewan’s contingent as the flagbearer for the 2017 Canada Summer Games Opening Ceremony on July 28th.

Wiens, 15, has earned many accomplishments in his decade-long diving career – including setting a new Saskatchewan record in the 3m platform dive, receiving the highest compulsory score in Diving Canada history, and earning a berth on the Pan American U20 Championships team just this past weekend at the 2017 Junior Elite National Championships.

Wiens has held six national titles, has been a member of Team Canada since 2013, and has represented Canada at four international competitions, most recently in Dresden, Germany. He was named Youth Male Athlete of the Year at the 2014 Saskatchewan Sport Awards.

At the 2016 Junior Elite Nationals held in Winnipeg’s Pan Am Pool, Wiens became the first diver in Diving Canada’s history to score a perfect 10 from all judges. Wiens will compete at the same venue at the 2017 Canada Summer Games from July 31st – August 1st.

Beyond his athletic accomplishments, Wiens’ coaching staff for the 2017 Canada Summer Games recommended him as Team Sask flagbearer on the basis of his strong leadership attributes and passion for his sport, stating that “he is always the first one to cheer on and encourage his younger teammates, while offering advice, support and guidance each day at practice.”

“We are pleased to have an athlete of Rylan’s quality lead our team into Opening Ceremonies. His past accomplishments along with his recent success at the 2017 Nationals and his potential to medal at the 2017 Canada Summer Games make him a great fit to carry our flag,” said Mark Bracken, Team Sask Chef de Mission.

The Opening Ceremony will be broadcasted live on TSN at 7:00 PM CST on Friday, July 28th.

Team Sask results will be updated daily on the Team Sask website at teamsask.ca and can also be found at https://cg2017.gems.pro.
