KAMLOOPS, BC – The Saskatchewan Triathlon Association Corporation is pleased to announce that Gabrielle Edwards (pictured below) has been asked to be the flag bearer for Team Saskatchewan at the opening ceremonies for the 2011 Western Canada Summer Games in Kamloops, BC. The Games Opening Ceremonies are this Friday
evening in Kamloops, BC.
A strong triathlon season to date with four podium finishes contributed to her selection as the provincial flag bearer. A rising star among Canada’s women Junior Elite triathletes, Edwards gives Saskatchewan a strong chance at a gold medal at the games, August 5th to 14th in Kamloops. Earlier this season, Edwards won bronze at the first race in the national junior elite triathlon in St. Malo Manitoba. In June, she won gold in the sprint distance, against all ages, at the
Craven-Genki Pike Lake Triathlon and won silver medals at the Brazil Fast Team Triathlon event and the North American Junior Triathlon Championships in Clermont, Florida.
Rounding out the women’s triathlon team will be Regina’s Nicole Cripps and Moose Jaw’s Sadie Schaeffer.Another Saskatoon resident, Robert Bigsby will be representing the men’s team, along with Regina’s Aidan Katz and Sean Hooper. Saskatoon’s Christophe Gerard will serve as alternate. All of the Saskatchewan athletes named to the Western Canada Summer Games Team train under the guidance of the Saskatchewan Triathlon Centre (STC). The STC focuses on identifying and developing elite youth, junior and U23 triathletes across the province as well as supporting the continued growth of the sport in Saskatchewan.
STAC is the Provincial Sport Governing Body for the sport of triathlon and is an active member of Sask Sport Inc.
