DAY 7: TEAM SASK at the 2019 Western Canada Summer Games


SWIFT CURRENT, SK (August 15, 2019): After an action-packed day with competitions taking place in every Phase 2 sport besides Golf, Team Sask has blown well past the 100 medal mark and taken back second place in the standings. A total of 28 medals were earned in Triathlon, Diving and Athletics, with many close finishes and personal bests recorded. On Friday, Golf will begin its competition at the 2019 Western Canada Summer Games.

TEAM SASK SUPPORTER SPOTLIGHT:
Tonight is Team Sask's Supporter Appreciation Reception, an event which serves to recognize the important support systems in the lives of our athletes. Thank you to all the parents, families, friends and coaches who allow our athletes to give their best on and off the field of play.

  • KELSEY CLAIRMONT (Saskatoon, Diving): "[My role model is] definitely my mom, because after every rough practice she always says something that boosts my confidence and helps me look on the bright side."
  • CHELSEA DYCK (Saskatoon, Rowing): "My personal role models include my parents and coaches. They have supported me through all of my decisions and have guided me and shaped me into the best athlete I can be."
  • NATE HARDER (Waldheim, Indoor Volleyball): "My dad is my role model because he has been playing this game for such a long time, and he is a great person and athlete on and off the court. I aspire to be that way.

DAY 6 HIGHLIGHTS:

  • ATHLETICS - TRACK: Athletics had a blazing opening day, with two gold medals in the men's (RON MACLEAN, Regina) and women's (JASMINE FEHR, Osler) 1500m. BRAYDEN MYTOPHER (Strasbourg) and KAITLYN HARRISON (Craven) took silver and bronze in the men's and women's 1500m, respectively. KAYLEE ILINISKY (Kinistino) won bronze in the 100m andKAYLEE TYMO (Regina) took bronze in the women's 5K. Para athlete AYVA DELAINEY (Grayson) won the bronze medal in 400m wheelchair, YOUSIF DELAINEY (Saskatoon) stole the show with a gold in the 400m, and HUNTER BERG (Swift Current) took the silver in the same event. In Special Olympics, MACKINLEY GADER (Borden) won silver in the 100m, while brothers BRADYN and KYLE GIRAUDIER (Assiniboia) won silver and bronze in the men's race.
  • ATHLETICS - FIELD: On the field, TAYLOR DE JONG (Saskatoon) won silver and KATHRYN GUENTER (Saskatoon) bronze in the women's Pole Vault. NICOLE KRAMCHYNSKY (Rosthern) took home gold in javelin and ALYSON EDWARDS (Strasbourg) took home bronze. Swift Current's SCOTT JOSEPH, 2019 WCSG torchbearer, won gold in the men's triple jump, withLOGAN FETTES (Assiniboia) taking second. To cap off the evening, BRETT LACHANCE andERIK SALAMON (both Saskatoon) went 1-2 in the men's discus.
  • TRIATHLONMOLLY LAKUSTIAK (Regina) earned a bronze medal in the Triathlon Individual All Female race this morning at Saskatchewan Landing Provincial Park.
  • DIVING: Saskatchewan Divers opened up their competition in a big way, earning gold (MARGO ERLAM, Saskatoon) and silver (QUINN GARIEPY, Saskatoon) in the women's 1m Spring. On the men's side, JAMIE SPILCHAK (Saskatoon) earned gold in the men's 3m spring.
  • WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Saskatchewan first faced off against Yukon, winning in three straight sets (25-20, 25-12, 25-20). The squad's put up a strong fight against Manitoba in their second game, but ultimately lost.
  • MEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Saskatchewan played two games today: the first was won against Team NT in 3 sets, while the second was lost to Team Manitoba.
  • ROWING: Thursday's time trials saw some windy conditions, but Saskatchewan athletes "did a really great job of managing the conditions. We had outstanding performances in the men’s four and women’s single, both finishing first in their respective time trials. We hope for calmer weather tomorrow with the start of finals and look forward to medals in what will be close races," said coach ANDREW KNORR (Saskatoon).
  • BASEBALL: Saskatchewan had a rematch against Alberta, but fell 5-12. 
  • TENNIS: Tennis Team All Mix took home silver hardware. The tennis athletes will be playing for individual medals tomorrow morning.
