ST. JOHN’S, NL (August 10, 2025): The first official competition day of the 2025 Canada Summer Games saw Team Sask compete in Basketball (M & F), Baseball (M), Box Lacrosse (F), TennisSoftball (F), Soccer (M), and Swimming. Event recaps can be found below.

Canoe Kayak had its second day of training at Quidi Vidi Lake, one of St. John’s most iconic landmarks. The Saskatchewan team is a family s Devri Robertson is coaching her three children Baer, Axa and Sabe, while her husband and former Canoe Kayak Canada national team member David will fill in as one of the major officials overseeing the competition.

Also in training today was the Cycling (Road) team, who familiarized themselves with their individual time trial race course on Team Gushue Highway prior to Monday afternoon’s race. A can’t-miss event will be the Criterium, a fast-paced closed-circuit race taking place in downtown St. John’s on Saturday, August 16th.

Both male and female Rugby Sevens teams were in training today ahead of tomorrow’s inaugural matchups against Team Manitoba. The male event is making its return to the Canada Games sport calendar after last being featured in 2009.

Beach Volleyball also spent the afternoon in training. Their tournament will kick off on Monday morning versus New Brunswick (female) and Nova Scotia (male).

Finally, Sailing spent the day in race preparation mode prior to Monday morning’s races at the Royal Newfoundland & Labrador Yacht Club.

DAY 2 COMPETITION RECAP

BASKETBALL (M & F) View gallery

  • Team Sask’s women’s basketball team got off to a quick start against the hosts on Sunday. Saskatchewan jumped out to a quick 10-2 lead and beat Newfoundland and Labrador 77-53 to start the Games 1-0. 
  • Next up is a meeting with Nunavut on Monday at 11:45am SK time (3:15pm local).
  • Men’s basketball had a great third quarter but couldn’t close it out falling 71-65 to New Brunswick on Sunday.
  • They are back on the court also playing Nunavut at 11:45am SK time (3:15pm local).

BASEBALL (M) View gallery

  • Team Saskatchewan scored three runs in the third inning to jump out to a 4-0 lead over Alberta on Sunday afternoon en route to a 8-1 win. Brandt Spencer of Meadow Lake got the start and picked up the win for Team Sask. 
  • Monday afternoon they will face Quebec (coming off an 11-0 win over Ontario) at 12:00pm SK time (3:30pm local).

BOX LACROSSE (F)

  • It was an 8-5 win for Team Sask to open competition against PE at Paradise Double Ice Complex.
  • They are back in action Monday at 7:30am SK time (11am local) against New Brunswick and then will take on Manitoba in their second game of the day at 1:30pm SK time (5pm local).

TENNIS View gallery

  • Team Sask got off to a strong start with a 5-1 win over Manitoba on Sunday.
  • Monday they meet New Brunswick in a pivotal test starting at 10:30am SK time (2pm local).

SOFTBALL (F)

  • Our Women’s softball team had a hard fought game Sunday but fell 1-0 to Alberta.
  • They are set for back-to-back games Monday when they take on Nova Scotia at 9am SK time (12:30pm local) and BC at 12:30pm SK time (4pm local)

SOCCER (F)

  • Soccer was on the pitch at the end of day two. Team SK had a tough one falling 2-0 to Ontario. 
  • They are back in action Monday against BC at 4pm SK time (7:30pm local).

SWIMMING

  • Saskatchewan swimmers began their meet with the 1500m freestyle women’s, 800m freestyle men’s, 200m(S1-5, S14)/400m(S6-13) freestyle para women’s and men’s, and 4x200m freestyle relay men’s and women’s timed finals.
