ST. CATHARINES, ON (August 9, 2022): A cold and raining day made for tough competition for Team Sask.

The second full day of competition was underway, with all teams on the schedule except for wrestling. Team Sask not only battled other provinces but had to fight the elements as well. There was no shortage of drama with triathletes crashing on the course, mud causing issues on the cycling mountain bike - cross country trail, and postponement of tennis action on the court.

TEAM SASK SPOTLIGHT:

  • Malik Darbi scored a hat trick against NT in the men's first soccer game. 
  • Nata Kolesova had a strong showing in the women’s sprint triathlon. The event consists of a 750m swim followed by a 5km bike and run. She put herself in good position right from the start, coming out of the water in the lead pack. Nata never looked back and put herself in third position on the bike. After a strong run Nata crossed the line in fourth place.
  • Team Sask women’s basketball battled in a tight game right from the start against QC. They were down six points with about four minutes to go and rallied back to get the lead and eventually win. Final score 61-57.
  • 13 for 13 festival:

    • Team Sask was partnered with a Niagara municipality- West Lincoln to showcase the unique cultural heritage, entertainment, art, and culinary experiences of the Region combined with the flavours of Saskatchewan. 

PREVIOUS DAY HIGHLIGHTS:

  • BASEBALL (M): Team Sask started late due to rain delays. That didn’t hurt the outcome, they came out on the winning side over Team BC 13-3.
  • BASKETBALL: On the men’s side Team Sask lost a tough one to QC. Final score 115 – 76. The women came out on top with a win over QC – final score 61-57!
  • BEACH VOLLEYBALL: The men’s team won two sets over NT scoring 21-14 and 21-17. They also took NU in two sets, final score 21-15 and 21-17. Team Sask now sits in second place in Pool C.
  • BOX LACROSSE (F): In their second game of the Games, Team Sask tied PE 5-5. They unfortunately fell short against QC, losing 4-0. Team Sask sits fifth in Pool B.
  • MOUNTAIN BIKE: Muddy conditions made the course difficult to manage. Oskar Stack-Michasiw was the lone finisher for Team Sask. He ended up 12th. Unfortunately, Carson Ritter and Henry Sharp were pulled from the race.
  • RUGBY SEVENS: Team Sask sits in fourth place after a loss to Team AB (19-10) and a win over NB (22-19).
  • SOCCER (M): Team Sask were down 1-0 to NT at the half but made a comeback to win the game 3-1. They currently sit second in Pool A.
  • SOFTBALL (F): Team Sask almost kept their winning streak alive. Despite the rainy conditions the team won 7-0 over PE but fell short against Manitoba 3-0.
  • SWIMMING, PARA SWIMMING, SPECIAL OLYMPICS: Top five finishers on the day include Sam Fisher placing fourth in 100m freestyle Special Olympics and Abby Gebhardt placing fourth in 50m breaststroke.
  • TENNIS: The rain was too much for tennis and matches had to be postponed. It will be an action-packed day for Team Sask today.
  • TRIATHLON: It was a slippery day at triathlon. Both men and women competed in the sprint event. The women had two top two finishes with Nata Kolesova finishing just off the podium in fourth place and Molly Lakustiak finishing in sixth place.
