AY 4: TEAM SASK at the 2019 Western Canada Summer Games

SWIFT CURRENT, SK (August 11, 2019): Wet and rainy conditions throughout most of Monday caused a number of event cancellations and delays in Cycling, Softball and Canoe Kayak, but Saskatchewan's athletes continued to add to the medal haul at the 2019 Western Canada Summer Games. Tomorrow also marks turnaround day. Phase 1 athletes will depart for home, and Phase 2 athletes will arrive in Swift Current -- ready to compete in Athletics, Baseball, Diving, Golf, Rowing, Tennis, Triathlon, Male and Female Volleyball, and Wrestling.

QUOTES OF THE DAY:

  • "Making friends here has been pretty breathtaking really, because I really didn't expect to meet a lot of people here. But after seeing all my teammates being very social, I decided I'd break out of my bubble and go and meet people from all over -- from Alberta, from Yukon. All these experiences will be something I'll never forget." LYNDON BOUVIER (Cole Lake, Men's U19 Softball) on his experiences at the 2019 Western Canada Summer Games
  • "My experience here has been great -- it's a once in a lifetime opportunity. I love having my parents here with me, especially with us going into the finals.... the Athletes' Village has been very fun, lots of laughs and smiles, lots of music." DAE DAE HALKETT (Christopher Lake, Men's U16 Softball) ahead of his team's gold medal game against Team Alberta on Tuesday
  • "We were absolutely buzzing in the changing room....it felt pretty good when I smashed the third in." ROBERT WOODROFFE-BROWN (Regina, Men's Soccer) after his team's decisive 8-1 win over Team NT, where the team captain scored a hat trick
  • "I'm from a small club -- so when we do team travel, it's small. This has been so much fun, being with the whole team and everything." CADENCE JOHNS (Moose Jaw) on the multi-sport Games experience and being part of a provincial team

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT:

  • Monday's scheduled Mountain Bike Eliminator event was cancelled, with multiple sections of the existing course made unusable due to rain. The people of Swift Current have stepped up, with a dozen or more volunteers gathering on Monday afternoon and evening working hard to create a new section so that Mountain Bikers can have a chance to compete on Tuesday.

DAY 4 HIGHLIGHTS:

  • CANOE KAYAK: Though most of today's events were rescheduled for Tuesday due to rainy conditions, Team Sask still earned its spots on the podium. In the Men's C1 200m JAYDEN HINGLEY (Saskatoon) took his seventh gold medal of the Games -- having so far taken first place in each event he's entered -- and CHRISTIAN PATTERSON (Regina) earned silver, his fifth medal in total.
