ST. JOHN’S, NL (August 17, 2025): For the third straight Canada Summer Games in a row, Team Sask Men’s Baseball has earned its spot on the podium.
The team was victorious in the bronze medal match against PEI on Saturday night, winning 4-2.
This was a repeat of the 2022 Canada Summer Games, when they beat Team BC for bronze. In 2017, the team defeated Manitoba in front of a sold out, hometown crowd at Shaw Park to take home its first-ever gold medal at the 2017 Canada Summer Games. Both teams were steered by Head Coach Greg Brons of Saskatoon.
For Brons, it has been a long time coming.
“I’ve been at almost every single Canada Games since 1989. In 1989 I was a kid, a fan; in 1993 I was a player; the only one I missed was 1997. Then I coached in 2001, and 2009, and so forth. So this was special to end it with a medal. Going in, you always want a medal but it’s not easy when you’re in that tough pool with Quebec, Alberta, BC and Ontario, so there’s not an easy game. It just shows how resilient our players are and when it comes down to it the players just grind. I told them from day one, that it’s not about who throws the hardest, who hits the furthest and who runs the fastest. The best player out there is the player that believes in himself. And these kids did.”
Prior to the medal ceremony, Brons noted that this would be his last time at the Canada Games helm. “There’s some good young coaches in our province and some guys that could really lead this and take it over and make it even better. I’m going to do another Canada Cup or two, but I won’t be back for the 2029 Canada Games.”
He also reflected on what the Canada Games have meant to him over the past 36 years. “It’s so good for the kids. They have so much fun, not only in the Games, but around the Athletes’ Village. They meet so many people. The Opening Ceremonies, the kids always love it. It’s a great atmosphere. It’s money well spent by our government. We’re breeding future leaders here.”
The first-ever Women’s Baseball competition at the Canada Games will commence on Monday, August 18. Saskatchewan will play its first game on Tuesday, August 19 at 12:00 PM NST/8:30 AM/CST. Find the schedule here.
