ST. JOHN’S, NL (August 19, 2025): After two weeks of high heat and record temperatures, athletes began week two competition at the 2025 Canada Summer Games with some more typical St. John’s weather. Despite rain delays for Female Baseball and postponements for Male Softball, spirits stayed high as the Games’ next crop of athletes began their events in pursuit of the podium.
The first medal of the day was earned by Athletics Canada 2025 U20 National Champion Nathan Pinno in the men's Shot Put. The University of Saskatchewan Huskie threw 16.48m to land the silver medal. In the evening session, David Lipton’s throws scored 421 points to land silver in the men’s Para Shot Put.
Pinno shared his throughts after the medal ceremony. "It feels pretty good. I was seeded fifth and came out with a silver, so can't be too upset about that. I worked hard all year, so I'm glad it paid off."
It was a strong day in the field for Pinno. "The first two [throws] were pretty good. I had three personal bests in the first round, second round, and fifth round. I was just feeling pretty good today. I haven't thrown this weight for two months. It's 16 lbs. and I usually throw 13.2 lbs. for U20. So I was expecting something big. Once I started practicing, I was getting those numbers up, so it's good. First real open competition here."
Pinno was born in Saskatoon, but grew up in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta. Despite his Alberta roots, he said it felt great to wear the green and white on the podium. "I love it. I was born in Saskatoon right in the RUH. It feels good to represent where I'm from."
With clearer skies forecasted for tomorrow, Baseball (F) and Softball (M) will resume, while Wrestling and Mountain Bike competition will begin on Wednesday.
