Team Sask sits at fifth overall, earns 20 medals during first week of the 2017 Canada Summer Games
WINNIPEG, MB (August 6th, 2017): The 2017 Canada Games has so far proved thrilling for Team Sask, as the province’s top amateur athletes have come up strong against the best in the nation after the first of two weeks of competition. Team Sask currently sits in fifth place overall with 20 medals (4 gold, 7 silver, and 9 bronze).
Throughout the fifty-year history of the Canada Games, Team Sask has traditionally fought with Team Manitoba and Team Nova Scotia for fifth spot in the rankings. Currently, Team Sask sits in front of both provinces.
Week one competitions kicked off on Sunday, July 29th and concluded on Friday, August 4th. The week saw highlights such as Nick Patrick of St. Louis, SK pitching a perfect softball game against B.C.; Joe Gerlinsky of the Battlefords winning gold and the province’s first-ever medal in sailing; medal performances in rowing, athletics, men's softball and diving; and many more exciting performances across the 11 sports that were contested throughout the first phase of the Games.
Additionally, Team Sask capped off the first week of the Games with a gold medal baseball match against Team Manitoba. In front of crowd of 6,800 in Winnipeg’s Shaw Park, Saskatchewan prevailed 3-1 and made history by bringing home the province’s first-ever gold medal in baseball at the Canada Games.
Beyond its medal count, Team Sask currently leads the race for the Centennial Cup, an honour awarded to the province or territory with the most improved performance compared to the most recent Games. At the 2013 Canada Summer Games held in Sherbrooke, Team Sask ended up in sixth place in both medal count and flag points.
Week two competitions kick off on Monday, August 7th and conclude with the Closing Ceremony on Sunday, August 13th. The following sports will be contested during week two:
